Away from the loud, raucous nightlife of downtown Lilycove, the harbor enjoyed the peace and stillness of the late hour. Smaller boats bobbed on the ocean's swell, ropes and anchors keeping them from floating away, while larger ships loomed like slumbering Wailord along the docks. [break][break]

The foot traffic that night—as with every night—was sparse. But cameras kept watch of any comings and goings, while security guards on the late shift watched screens connected to them with discerning eyes. [break][break]

Which was why a Rotom was so useful. [break][break]

In the driver's seat of an unmarked van, Zev waited for his Pokémon to return after hacking the security camera pointed down a particular pier. The feed had gone dark, buying some time for the exchange that was about to occur. [break][break]

The Rocket Beast glanced at the grunt accompanying him. As a new recruit, PIERCE WILDE was there to prove himself capable of even the simplest job: unload illegally obtained Pokémon from a smuggling ship, load them into the van, and make the short trip with Zev to a safehouse in the city's slums, where Pokémon were stored until sold on the black market. It was a job that required little thinking but plenty of efficiency and discretion. [break][break]

"The clock's ticking. We want to pack the van and leave before a guard comes over to check the camera," Zev said, opening the door and stepping out of the vehicle. [break][break]

His Rotom hovered at his shoulder as he started down the pier, fully expecting Pierce to follow him without further instruction.
